While there are plenty of characters in TV and movies who are depicted as stoners, there are just as many who are clearly cannabis users but are never explicitly shown doing so.
Here are 10 cartoon characters who never smoked marijuana, but are still clearly stoners:
1. Patrick Star, Spongebob
Patrick Star spent most of his time eating and sleeping. When he wasn’t doing those things, he was usually making very stupid observations about the world not to mention the dumb look on his face all the time. Sounds like your stereotypical stoner if you ask me.
How could spinach give Popeye such a boost to his system? Maybe because it wasn’t spinach at all. Spinach was actually a slang term for cannabis before “marijuana” became more popular in the 1930’s and 1940’s. And also Popeye smokes his spinach sometimes. When have you ever heard of someone smoking spinach?
3. Snorlax, Pokemon
Snorlax’s entire existence is basically eating and sleeping. Sounds like he’s on a constant diet of cannabis. Sounds a little like some guys I know. I even have a friend who smokes so much and is constantly eating his nickname is “Munchies”. Funny thing is there are some friends in our circle who don’t even know his real name.
4. Michaelangelo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
You could probably put all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on this list considering their love of pizza and skateboarding. But Michaelangelo in particular was the “party dude” of the group. And everyone knows the party dude in a group of teenagers is the one who’s smoking weed.
5. Stimpy, Ren and Stimpy
If you ever watched Ren and Stimpy, you know there was something weird about these characters. But Stimpy seemed to always be so casual and collected despite whatever bizarre and unusual situations the two of them would get into. That can only be explained by constantly having a nice buzz going on. Also, they loved eating pizza.
What does Garfield have in common with stoners? They both hate Mondays, love sleeping and love eating lasagna. Although Garfield’s constant schemes against Odie possibly indicate Garfield wasn’t consuming enough cannabis.
7. Cookie Monster, Sesame Street
C’mon, Cookie Monster. You’re not fooling anyone. No one can eat that many cookies unless they’ve got a serious case of the munchies.
8. Winnie the Pooh
An overweight bear constantly on the hunt for honey and never able to find his pants? Yeah, he definitely was hitting the bong.
9 and 10. Scooby Doo and Shaggy
Technically it may not be fair to put these guys on the list since it’s so blatantly obvious that they’re supposed to be stoner characters. Shaggy is the “shaggy” looking hippie stoner, they live in a “mystery van,” they’re constantly snacking and the dog’s freaking middle name is “Doobie.” Either the makers of this show somehow absentmindedly inserted the most stoner references ever or these two were eating more than just Scooby Snacks.
